Airbnb Fiction
Or, fake stories inspired by real vacation rentals
Airbnb is where I go through the looking glass. Every time the writing slows or the plot bogs down, I get the urge to escape my drudgery. Surely I’d understand my characters better if I changed my viewpoint. Maybe I should change it to, say, the view from the front porch of a bungalow in Venice Beach?
Since I can’t hop a jet every time the books hit a speed bump, I spend a lot of time on Airbnb. Is 2-3 hours a week a lot? Would you judge me if it was more? Anyway, I don’t care if you judge. It’s good stress relief. Not to mention, perfectly free. And you wouldn’t believe some of the places you can rent for a night. You have several choices if you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a former missile silo. Covered wagons, too.
Love the idea of sleeping in an open cardboard box? Well, guess what—you can pay to do so in Italy!
The novelist in me isn’t drawn to the places, though. They’re too on the nose.
